Origin

The character 貞 combines two components to express integrity and constancy. The top part, 卜, originally depicted a divining stick used to read omens and make decisions, which came to suggest the idea of determining or fixing something in place. The bottom part, 貝 (shell or precious item), serves as a sound hint to guide pronunciation rather than add meaning.
