Privacy policy
Kanji Decipher is a static reference site. It has no user accounts and does not ask you for any personal information. This page explains what that means in practice, and what will change when advertising is switched on.
What we collect today
- Nothing that identifies you. There are no sign-ups, no logins, no forms, and no analytics or tracking scripts at the time of writing.
-
A theme preference (light / dark / system) is stored in
your browser’s
localStorage. It never leaves your device and is not sent to us. - Standard server logs. Like almost any website, the server may briefly record request data such as your IP address, the page requested, and your browser’s user-agent string. These are used only for security and debugging and are not used to build a profile of you.
- Offline caching. If you add the site to your home screen or revisit pages, a service worker stores copies of pages and assets in your browser cache so they load without a connection. This data stays on your device; you can clear it any time from your browser settings.
Cookies
The site itself currently sets no cookies.
Advertising (planned)
Kanji Decipher intends to display ads through Google AdSense to cover hosting costs. Once ads are live:
- Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads, including ads based on your prior visits to this site and other websites.
- This introduces third-party, cookie-based tracking that does not exist today. That data is collected and controlled by Google, not by Kanji Decipher.
- You can review and control how Google personalises ads at myadcenter.google.com, and opt out of personalised advertising from many providers at optout.aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu.
- More detail is in Google’s “How Google uses information from sites that use our services”.
This policy will be updated with the concrete details (and any consent mechanism required in your region) when advertising actually goes live.
Analytics
None at present. If a privacy-respecting analytics tool is added later, this page will be updated to say what it collects.
Data sources
The kanji data shown on the site comes from public, freely-licensed datasets (listed on the credits page). No information about you is sent to those projects or to any other third party, other than the advertising described above.
Children
The site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
This policy may change as the site evolves — most importantly when ads are enabled. The “last updated” date above reflects the current version.
