Origin

The character 漠 combines water (氵) on the left with the sound component 莫 on the right. The water radical suggests a large body of water or expansive wetland. The right side 莫 hints at the pronunciation but originally carries the sense of "none" or "nothing." Together, these parts evoke a vast, empty expanse — either a desert of sand or a body of water so wide it seems to stretch endlessly. This visual idea of emptiness and vastness eventually came to mean both "desert" and the abstract sense of "vague" or "obscure."
