Origin
The character 河 combines water (shown by the three-dot water radical on the left) with a sound hint on the right. The right component 可 doesn't describe what a river is, but rather tells you roughly how to pronounce the character—similar to how English spelling pairs letters with sounds. By pairing the water radical with this sound hint, the character came to mean "river," a body of flowing water. This phono-semantic structure was an efficient way to build Chinese characters: use one part to show the general category (water), and another to guide pronunciation.
