Origin

This character combines two visual ideas to express the concept of livestock. The bottom component, 田, depicts a field or farmland. The top component, 玄, suggests something mysterious or hidden—possibly referring to breeding or the unseen processes of animal husbandry. Together, the character shows animals being raised and managed on cultivated land, which captures the essence of keeping domestic fowl and livestock. Over time, the shape became more abstract, but the meaning of "livestock" or "domestic animals" stuck with this combination.
