Origin

The character 雅 combines two parts to express elegance and refinement. On the left, 牙 (fang or tusk) provides a sound hint for how the character is pronounced — it has nothing to do with the meaning. On the right, 隹 represents a bird, which serves as the meaning-related part. Birds, especially in Chinese culture, were associated with grace and refinement, so pairing a bird with the sound component 牙 created a character that expresses refined, gracious beauty.
