Origin

This character combines the idea of "two" (represented by the horizontal lines 二) with "mouth" or "opening" (口) sandwiched between them. The structure suggests something ranked or positioned between other things—literally framed on both sides. This visual arrangement of being enclosed or secondary came to mean "next in rank" or "come after," which then extended to "Asia" as the continent that was understood as second to China in the classical East Asian world view. The character essentially pictures a middle or lesser position by its very shape.
