Origin

The character combines "insect" (the radical at the bottom) with a component suggesting something enclosed or hidden (at the top). Since honey is produced by insects—specifically bees—and is a sweet substance they create, the character visually groups together the idea of insects with the notion of something precious and contained. The top component also hints at the golden, enclosed nature of honey stored in honeycomb. Over time, this combination came to represent honey and the sweet products made by insects.
