Origin

This character combines thread (糸) on the left with a component meaning "to reach" or "to bring about" on the right. The idea is that thread can be woven so tightly and precisely that it reaches a state of extreme fineness—the threads are so closely worked together that they achieve a refined, delicate texture. The character thus came to mean fine or delicate in quality, describing something with a smooth, even finish like well-made cloth.
