Origin
This character is a picture of a container viewed from the front. The two vertical lines on the sides represent the walls of a jar or can, while the horizontal strokes across the middle suggest the opening or rim at the top. Over time, the shape became more stylized and geometric, but it still basically shows a simple cylindrical vessel used for storing things. The character came to be used as a classifier radical for any kind of container in Chinese and Japanese writing.
