Origin

The character 租 combines a picture of grain or crops (the left side) with a sound component on the right that suggests how the character is pronounced. Because the character centers on crops, it naturally came to mean taxes levied on harvests—a tariff or crop tax that farmers owed. The right component doesn't add meaning; it just hints at the pronunciation. Over time the meaning extended to other kinds of renting or borrowing, since both involve paying for temporary use of something.
