Origin
This character combines two parts to express the idea of something that accumulates mass. The bottom component, 里, originally represented a unit of distance or a village area — basically a substantial stretch of land. The top component, 千, means "thousand," suggesting a large quantity or multiplication. Together, the character pictures a thousand of something piled or layered on top of each other, which visually and conceptually conveys the sense of weight, mass, and importance. Over time, the meaning expanded from the physical heaviness of many things stacked together to the more abstract sense of something being important or worthy of respect — something that "weighs heavily" on your mind.
