Origin

This character combines two components to express the idea of appearance. The left part, 豸, is a classifier for animals and creatures, while the right part, 皃, represents a face or facial features. By joining a reference to living things with the concept of a face, the character came to mean the overall form or appearance that a creature presents to the world—its countenance or visible character. Over time, this extended to mean appearance or form more broadly, applying to anything that can be perceived visually.
