This character combines two components that together suggest the idea of signs or portents appearing. The left side shows a person or figure, while the right side represents something small or fragmentary, like a crack or break. Just as a small crack in the ground might be an omen of an earthquake to come, or as subtle symptoms appear before illness, this character depicts how small visible signs point to something larger about to happen. Over time, the meaning expanded to include any kind of sign or indication of what's coming, and eventually the numeral sense of "trillion" arose from its use in counting systems.
