皮 (skin) + 肉 (flesh) — from a Zen phrase 皮肉骨髄 ('skin, flesh, bone, marrow') ranking a disciple's grasp; 'skin and flesh' meant a shallow understanding, and the word drifted to mean cutting sarcasm or bitter irony.
